I am looking forward to this video project. I'm a middle school math teacher and I would like to see my students do something similar. This will be a great intro for them. Good luck!
I will subscribe and follow your results. A project, I have been involved with, called CLIPS, has two "Who Cares?" movies. One on Fractions and one on Periodic and Sine Functions.
I think the title "Who Cares?" might be a tad negative - however, it is surprising how difficult it is to write an "elevator pitch" for some of the topics that are staples in the Math curriculum.
The ones that we tried certainly don't stick within the 30 second requirement.
If I was writing one about the derivative, the organizing concept would be "change".
If the class gets good at these, maybe they could help us with our next "Who Cares?" movie on Linear Growing Patterns.
This is so cool! I am not a math teacher, and I am not sure I remember what a derivative is, so I am going to be watching here to see what you guys can teach me!

I have been following along on your blog for a month or so now, and your Calculus assignment caught my attention. I have tried to get my Physics and Applied Math classes to do some video assignments, but I set them up as bonus type of things. So far, just a lot of talk and not much action. I am interested in seeing your kids' final results.
One question though. I am wondering why you chose youtube over teachertube. Unfortunately youtube is blocked at school and I am imagining that other schools are in the same boat. Teacher tube is not though…..
What a cool assignment! My job is technology integration in Virginia Beach, and I have a hard time getting math teachers, especially, to use technology.
So, students, you'd better do a good job so I can show the teachers here how useful the web is for motivating you!
Our students are also blocked from YouTube, but Teacher Tube is SO SLOW, I would still choose YouTube if I were doing something like this.
Intrigued by the possibilities. I'm really looking forward to the creativity and imagination that your videos will display.
This seems like a great project for others to replicate.
